Social problem confronting education on the Mainland or the Virgin Islands A Social problem is defined as the condition that is viewed by the community as unpleasant and
unwelcoming. Murder or theft is an example of a social problem. A problem becomes social in
nature when it expressed to others and the action of one person leads to similar action of other
persons. I don't understand what this is saying. Also, for a problem to be social, a great number
of people must be involved and must consider a particular condition as unwelcoming or
unpleasant. Social problems are categorized into four major factors to include, Economic
Factors; Cultural Factors; Biological Factors; and Psychological Factors. These factors listed are
of great concern to many and are perceived differently. The existence of social problems is
infiltrated by the negative exploitation of media forms, specifically newspaper publications who
continue to further deteriorate societal problems. Also, it is wise to note that social problems may
be within the local, state, national or even international level. Therefore, I have chosen to focus
on the violence confronting education in the Virgin Islands school. "Presently in our schools
throughout the territory, there are series of fights that are occurring between boys, girls, and just
groups, raising havoc in the schools. Individual risk factors for school violence include a
tendency to externalize problems, or act out, as well as developmental delays, low IQ, and
reading problems. School violence include an unstable home environment, violent
neighborhoods, and certain characteristics of a school environment. A neighborhood environment
may contribute to school violence when a community?s high rates of crime or drug use spills
over into the classroom. The life of a child can be more complicated than their parents or
guardians think. While some may trivialize the issues youngsters face on a daily basis, including relationship problems, self-esteem, dating, and sex and more, the fact is, a child/ren, just like
adults, must navigate through a host of decisions rife with consequences. While bullies, gangs,
weapons, and substance abuse all contribute to the fear experienced by many of today's students,
violence in neighbourhoods and communities cannot be overlooked. Notwithstanding the
sometimes unfounded and overgeneralized fear and apprehension about violence among children
and adults, often fuelled by the media, is a legitimate concern for everyone. For example, an
altercation between students resulted in the injury of one student. School officials is committed
to ensuring that its schools maintain a safe and orderly environment for students to learn. ?Many
things really bother me about the attack. First, there is the fact of the beating itself, in which a
young man, who made no attempt to escalate the incident or to fight back, was victimized so
brutally. Secondly, the incident took place in front of over a dozen people, who did nothing to
defuse the situation or even to help the young man after he was injured. ?Third, it seem like it
was fun for most students, especially for those that made a video post for Facebook and other
social medias where people earn bragging rights for the most hits, thus glorifying a culture of
violence. Last, and perhaps most disturbing, are the online statements of many people who have
urged physical retaliation. We simply cannot continue like this and remain a viable community.?
?Clearly, there is a need to collaborate on establishing and strengthening policies to make it clear
that there is zero tolerance for this type of behavior among our students and young people,?
Many young people, aware of the dangers that exist within their communities and schools, feel
compelled to make changes in their lifestyles. Some students changed the way they went to and
from school while some stayed home from school or cut class because of concerns about crime
and violence in their communities. Such behaviour reveals that many students fear for their
personal safety while merely attempting to attend school. The roots of violence reach deep into society, tapping into such complex conditions as poverty, racism, joblessness, and hopelessness.
Each epidemic of violence triggers "knee-jerk" calls for legislation and quick fixes. Often,
however, little is done in the long run to change conditions that give rise to violent behaviours. It
should be apparent that educators by themselves cannot carry out their mandate of educating
children while trying to rid their schools and surrounding communities of violence. School
violence tends to be higher in certain types of schools, the characteristics of which are: large
male population, higher grade levels. Disciplinary problems, high student- to teacher ratio and
urban location. Prevention and intervention strategies may target individual students, families,
the school community, or society in general. Individual level strategies target at risk or
aggressive students and teach these students conflict resolution, problem solving, and social
skills. Family based solutions attempt to improve family relationships in order to improve
students' experiences while they are at home. School wide strategies are designed to modify
school characteristics associated with violence. Examples of this would be classroom practices
that encourage student cooperation and close interaction with teachers, or the presence of police
and law enforcement in schools to discourage violence. Finally, society level prevention
strategies attempt to change social and cultural conditions in order to reduce violence, regardless
of where it occurs. Society might try to reduce violence through violence portrayed in or music.
The first-term Democrat also called for soul searching on how to curtail violence as a whole.
?We cannot legislate civility or force people to help their fellow human beings and to forego
violent retaliation. We can, however, engage in a community wide conversation and begin to
come to a consensus that enough is enough, and that we must commit to settling our disputes
without resorting to violence. ?This cycle of violence and retaliation is destroying our community and killing a generation of
young men and women, and it time for it to stop. As Martin Luther King so wisely said, ?We
must learn to live together as brothers or we shall perish together as fools,? he said.
