The J Company is engaged in providing management services to a wide variety of custom- ers. Services provided include accountancy, payroll, resource planning, recruitment, infor- mation management and financial planning. While the J Company has achieved profit- ability overall, its directors are concerned that they do not have adequate control over all of the management services it provides. The J Company is structured along formal functional lines with a director responsible for each service provided. Increasingly, customers require a more comprehensive service in which the functional boundaries which the J Company has established in its structure are crossed. The directors now consider that the functional struc- ture which is currently employed no longer enables the J Company to service its customers’ needs effectively. Requirements Discuss the problems of the current structure. Recommend an organisational structure for the J Company which enables it to meet its customer needs more effectively and allows the directors to evaluate managerial performance.
